An Indian mobile number for ChatGPT, with SMS or WhatsApp codes
India is unusual on OpenAI's lists: it appears both among the countries with phone-only ChatGPT sign-up and among the countries where OpenAI can deliver the one-time code through WhatsApp. For a country where the mobile number already doubles as a login ID for shopping, travel and delivery apps, that fits.
It also means a +91 number can end up doing more work on an OpenAI account than anywhere else: it may be the only sign-in, it may receive codes on two channels, and it can never be replaced once verified. Choosing a number you intend to keep is the whole game.
Here's how OpenAI treats Indian numbers, how to enter one so the OTP arrives, what to do when the screen mentions WhatsApp, and what an SMSCreation Indian number includes.
Why a +91 number for ChatGPT
Indians are used to OTP-based sign-in everywhere, and OpenAI's phone-only sign-up brings ChatGPT in line with that habit for new users in India. People abroad, including students, freelancers and families working with Indian teams, often want the same arrangement: an account that signs in on an Indian number without depending on a local SIM they can't easily keep.
An SMSCreation Indian number isn't a SIM in a handset, so it isn't meant for UPI, which binds to the SIM in your phone. It is well suited to what OpenAI needs: receiving a one-time code wherever you are and staying active for years.
SMS or WhatsApp: how OpenAI reaches an Indian number
OpenAI lists India among the twelve countries where it supports WhatsApp phone verification. If WhatsApp is available for the country you select, the screen may tell you the one-time code is going to WhatsApp, and you then type the code you receive there. Otherwise the code comes as a normal SMS.
Either way, OpenAI never sends it by email or voice call. If you want to be ready for the WhatsApp route, register WhatsApp on the same Indian number first; that registration itself uses an SMS or call code, which arrives in your SMSCreation dashboard. Read the verification screen carefully so you know which inbox to check.

These India numbers are listed right now (31 in total). Choose one on the country page; the hidden digits are assigned when your order is approved and the number is activated.
Entering an Indian number correctly
Indian mobile numbers have ten digits and begin with 6, 7, 8 or 9. OpenAI's country dropdown starts on the United States, so switch it to India first; the form then supplies +91 and wants only those ten digits.
Two habits cause failures. Some people add a 0 in front, the trunk prefix used when dialling from landlines, which makes eleven digits. Others retype 91 after the dropdown has already added it. Both produce a number OpenAI can't deliver to.
- Dropdown
- India (+91), not the default United States
- Type
- 81234 56789: ten digits, starting 6–9
- Don't type
- 081234 56789 or 91 81234 56789
- International form
- +91 81234 56789
Phone-only accounts: what changes
If you create ChatGPT with just the +91 number, OpenAI says password resets happen by SMS and need a device you've already logged in on at least once. MFA can't be switched on until you link an email under Settings → Account → Email → Add, and a verified email is also needed before upgrading to a paid plan. Once the email is linked, you can switch to Google, Apple or Microsoft login.
Getting verified, step by step
- 01Buy an Indian number in SMSCreation; the full +91 number appears in your dashboard.
- 02Optionally register WhatsApp on it, so a WhatsApp code from OpenAI has somewhere to land.
- 03At OpenAI's phone step, pick India and type the ten digits without 0 or 91.
- 04Check which channel the screen names, then read the code from your SMS inbox or from WhatsApp.
- 05Link an email if the account is phone-only, and enable MFA under Settings → Security and login.
- 06Keep the number renewing so future OTPs keep reaching it.
Rules to know before you verify
- OpenAI cannot change the phone number on an account, so the +91 number is permanent there.
- A number counts toward a lifetime limit of three verifications, and after one it can't create another account.
- “Too many signups with this number” means OpenAI already knows the number, possibly from its previous owner; OpenAI says there's no workaround.
- Landlines, VoIP numbers, Google Voice and premium numbers are refused.
- “Unsupported country” relates to where you access OpenAI from, not to the Indian number.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Price and keeping your Indian number
An Indian number is from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan, $21.60 billed yearly, with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month. It stays yours for as long as it renews, which is what a permanent OpenAI login needs.
If it doesn't work for OpenAI's verification, the 7-day replacement guarantee gives you a free replacement Indian number within 7 days of activation, or a 100% refund. If you haven't used the number for any call or SMS, a no-questions-asked refund is available within 7 days.

Questions
Why did OpenAI say my code was sent to WhatsApp?
India is on OpenAI's list of countries with WhatsApp verification. When it's available, the screen may route the one-time code to WhatsApp on that number. Open WhatsApp on the Indian number and enter the code from there; OpenAI doesn't offer email or call delivery.
Can I sign up to ChatGPT in India with just my phone number?
Yes, for new users. OpenAI lists India among the countries where phone-only sign-up has rolled out. You'll still need to link an email later to enable MFA or buy a paid plan.
Should I add 0 or 91 before my number on OpenAI's form?
No. With India selected, the form already includes +91. Type only the ten digits that start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. A leading 0 or a repeated 91 makes the number invalid.
Can I change my ChatGPT phone number after switching carriers in India?
No. OpenAI doesn't allow changing the phone number on an account. If you lose access to the old number, the account stays tied to it anyway, and SMS password resets on a phone-only account go there.
Can one Indian number verify several ChatGPT accounts?
Barely. OpenAI caps a number at three verifications in total, and once it has verified anything it can't create a new account. One number per account avoids surprises.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
