Mobile number formats & country codes for 181 countries
Every phone number in the world fits one international format, known as E.164: a plus sign, the country code and the national significant number, up to 15 digits in total. The country code identifies the country; the national significant number (NSN) is everything after it, and its length varies from about 7 to 12 digits depending on the country.
To dial abroad you replace the + with your exit prefix — 00 in most countries, 011 in the US and Canada — and you drop the trunk prefix, usually a leading 0, that the number carries in domestic format. The reference table below applies those rules to 181 countries, so you can read, write and check any mobile number.
How to read the table
- Country
- The country or territory the numbering plan belongs to.
- Code
- The international country code you put after the + sign, for example +1, +44 or +91.
- Mobile digits
- How many digits a mobile number has after the country code (the national significant number), without the trunk prefix.
- Example
- A sample mobile number in international format, showing the usual grouping of digits.
- Exit code
- What callers in that country dial before a foreign country code, such as 00 or 011. On a mobile, + does the same job.
- Time zone
- The main time zone offset from UTC, useful when you expect a call or a code from someone in that country.
Well-known examples
- United States and Canada: +1, then a 10-digit number (3-digit area code + 7 digits), for example +1 201 555 0123.
- United Kingdom: +44, then 10 digits; mobile numbers start with 7, for example +44 7700 900123 (07700 900123 at home).
- India: +91, then a 10-digit mobile number, for example +91 81234 56789.
- Germany: +49, then a mobile number of 10 or 11 digits starting with 15, 16 or 17, for example +49 151 23456789.
Shared country codes
Most countries have their own country code, but a few codes are shared by several countries or territories. In those cases the digits after the code tell you where the number belongs.
- +1 (NANP)
- The North American Numbering Plan covers the United States, Canada and many Caribbean countries and territories. They all use 10-digit numbers; the 3-digit area code shows which country or region the number belongs to.
- +7
- Shared by Russia and Kazakhstan. Both use 10-digit national numbers; Kazakhstan numbers typically begin with 6 or 7 after the code.
- +44
- Used by the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies — Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man — which have their own number ranges within the UK plan.
Writing numbers correctly for sign-ups
- Choose the right country in the form's country picker first — it adds the country code for you.
- Then type only the national significant number, without the leading 0 or other trunk prefix.
- If the form has a single field, use the full international format: + country code + number, e.g. +447700900123.
- Leave out spaces, dashes and brackets unless the form adds them itself.
- Never type the exit code (00 or 011) into a sign-up form — use + or the country picker.
- Double-check the digit count against the table; one missing or extra digit is the most common reason a code never arrives.
Why digit counts matter for verification
Sign-up forms and verification systems validate numbers before they send anything. They check that the country code exists, that the national number has an allowed length for that country, and often that it falls in the mobile range rather than a landline range. A UK mobile with 9 digits after +44, or a US number with 11, fails that check silently or with a vague error.
The same checks explain why the trunk prefix causes trouble: +44 07700 900123 contains an extra digit, so the service either rejects it or sends the code to a number that doesn't exist. Writing numbers in E.164 and matching the digit counts in the table avoids both problems. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format, so it passes these format checks as an ordinary mobile line.

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working

SMSCreation offers real mobile numbers in all 181 countries listed above, with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly). Keep the number as long as you want; the 7-day money-back guarantee applies as long as the number has not been used for any call or SMS.
Questions
How many digits is a mobile number?
It depends on the country. After the country code, mobile numbers usually have 7 to 12 digits — 10 in the US, Canada, the UK and India, and 10 or 11 in Germany.
What is the maximum length of a phone number?
Under the E.164 standard, a full international number — country code plus national number — has at most 15 digits.
What is a country code?
The 1–3 digit prefix after the + that identifies the country, such as +1, +44 or +971. The table lists the code for each country.
Do I include the 0 when writing an international number?
No. Drop the domestic trunk prefix, usually 0: UK 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123.
What is the difference between 00, 011 and +?
00 and 011 are exit codes used to dial abroad — 011 in the US and Canada, 00 in most other countries. On a mobile, + replaces either one.
Why does a sign-up form say my number is invalid?
Usually the wrong country is selected, the leading 0 was kept, or the digit count doesn't match that country's format. Check it against the table.
Can two countries share a country code?
Yes. +1 is shared across the North American Numbering Plan, +7 by Russia and Kazakhstan, and +44 by the UK and the Crown Dependencies.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
