How to get an Indonesian phone number from abroad
Indonesia's digital economy runs on the mobile number. Ride-hailing and delivery super-apps, e-wallets, marketplaces and online travel sites all verify accounts by SMS or WhatsApp, and Indonesian contacts, from villa owners in Bali to suppliers in Jakarta, usually expect you to be on WhatsApp with a +62 number.
If you're outside Indonesia, getting a local number is not as simple as buying a SIM online, because Indonesian lines are registered to an identity and foreigners have to register in person. This guide explains how Indonesian mobile numbers work, what the registration rules say, how the options compare and how to get a real Indonesian mobile number from anywhere.
How Indonesian mobile numbers work
Indonesia's country code is +62. Inside the country, numbers begin with the trunk prefix 0, which is dropped after +62. Mobile numbers start with 08 at home, so internationally they begin +62 8.
Unlike many countries, Indonesian mobile numbers don't all have the same length. After +62 a mobile number can have 9 to 12 digits, and most current numbers have 10 or 11, for example 0812-3456-7890 at home or +62 812-3456-7890 abroad. That variation is normal and doesn't mean a number is wrong.
The first digits after 08 hint at which operator issued the line, for example the 0811 to 0813 series, but a sign-up form only cares that the number is a valid +62 8 mobile. Landlines use area codes such as 021 for Jakarta and can't receive SMS codes.

SIM registration rules for foreigners
Indonesian mobile numbers must be registered to their user. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) issued Minister Regulation No. 7 of 2026 on subscriber registration, which introduces biometric face recognition linked to national population data for Indonesian citizens.
For foreign nationals, Komdigi states that registration uses a passport and a valid stay permit document, and that new registration and re-registration for foreigners is done in person at an operator's official outlet, with a passport, KITAS (temporary stay permit) or KITAP (permanent stay permit). The regulation also caps prepaid numbers at three per identity for each operator.
So a local prepaid SIM is a practical choice when you're in Indonesia, but you can't set one up from abroad, and it needs to stay in a phone and be kept active. If you only visit once or twice a year, keeping that SIM alive between trips is often the hardest part, and a number that lapses may later be reassigned to someone else.
Your options, compared
- Roaming your home SIM
- Keeps your usual number, but it isn't +62, so Indonesian forms and apps that want a local number reject it
- Indonesian prepaid SIM
- A genuine 08 number; foreigners register in person with a passport and stay permit, max three prepaid numbers per operator
- eSIM data plan
- Handy for data when you land in Jakarta or Bali, but most travel eSIMs have no Indonesian number
- VoIP app number
- Easy to get, but not an Indonesian mobile, and many apps refuse internet numbers for verification
- Real mobile number online
- A +62 8 mobile number in a web dashboard; no SIM, no passport, no outlet visit
Where an Indonesian number helps
Services that check your identity, such as Indonesian bank accounts and some e-wallet features, generally expect a line registered in your own name. For those, a SIM registered at an operator outlet is the right tool.
- Ride-hailing, food delivery and e-commerce apps widely used in Indonesia, which verify accounts by SMS or WhatsApp.
- Booking villas, guesthouses, drivers and tours, where hosts coordinate on WhatsApp.
- Running a business with Indonesian customers who expect a +62 WhatsApp Business number.
- Digital nomads and remote workers in Bali or Jakarta who want a local contact that doesn't depend on a SIM.
- Setting up accounts before relocating, so they're ready on arrival.
- Keeping your Indonesian number reachable after you leave the country.
How to get an Indonesian number with SMSCreation
- 01Sign up with an email address. No passport, KITAS or Indonesian address is needed.
- 02Open the Indonesia list and choose a number. Each is a real +62 8 mobile number; the first two and last two digits show as XX until activation.
- 03Choose a plan. The yearly plan is $1.80 a month ($21.60 billed yearly); other terms are shown at checkout.
- 04Pay with USDT or USDC on Tron, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Base or Solana, or from your wallet balance.
- 05The number appears in your dashboard. Incoming SMS and calls arrive there instantly.
- 06Enter it as +62 followed by the digits starting with 8, exactly as shown in your dashboard.
Tips for Indonesian numbers
- Drop the 0. 0812… becomes +62 812…; writing +62 0812 makes the number invalid.
- Don't pad or trim to a fixed length. Indonesian mobiles vary in length, so copy the number exactly from your dashboard.
- If a form has an Indonesia country picker, type the number starting with 8, without the 0.
- When sharing your number with Indonesian contacts, give the 08 form; locally they dial the full number starting with 0, whatever the island, because Indonesian mobiles have no area code.
- Indonesia has three time zones: Jakarta is UTC+7, Bali UTC+8 and Papua UTC+9, with no daylight saving. A contact in Bali is one hour ahead of Jakarta.
- If a code is slow, wait a minute before asking again, or choose a voice call if the app offers one. Incoming calls are unlimited.
- Keep the number renewed so you can receive new codes when you change phones.
When SMSCreation is not the right choice
If you live in Indonesia and need a line registered to your passport and KITAS, for banking or other identity-linked services, get a SIM at an operator outlet. If you only need mobile data during a holiday, an eSIM data plan is simpler.
SMSCreation fits when you need a real Indonesian mobile number for codes, contacts and business, reachable from any country without a SIM.
Formats you'll see for Indonesian numbers
Indonesians write the same number in several ways, and it helps to recognize them all before you type yours into a form.
- 0812-3456-7890: the domestic form with the trunk prefix 0, used on business cards and signs.
- +62 812-3456-7890: the international form, which is what sign-up forms and apps expect.
- 6281234567890 without a plus: often seen in WhatsApp click-to-chat links, which use the full international number with no + and no leading 0.
- (021) numbers: Jakarta landlines, which can't receive SMS codes, so don't confuse them with mobiles.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Price, keeping your number and the 7-day guarantee
An Indonesian number costs the same as every other country: from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing call minutes a month.
The number stays yours while you keep renewing it. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Telegram, Google or another app, you get a free replacement in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a full refund if you prefer.
Questions
Can a foreigner get an Indonesian SIM card?
Yes, in Indonesia. Komdigi says foreigners register at an operator's official outlet using a passport and a valid stay permit such as a KITAS or KITAP.
Can I get an Indonesian number from outside Indonesia?
Yes. An SMSCreation +62 mobile number needs only an email address and crypto payment, with no passport and no outlet visit.
Why do Indonesian mobile numbers have different lengths?
Indonesia's mobile ranges were issued with different lengths, so a valid number can have 9 to 12 digits after +62. Most have 10 or 11.
Should I write +62 08 or +62 8?
Always +62 8. The 0 is the domestic trunk prefix and must be dropped after the country code.
How many SIM cards can I register in Indonesia?
