How to get a Mexican phone number from abroad

WhatsApp is the everyday way to message people and businesses in Mexico, and a Mexican number is the easiest way to be reachable for landlords, clients, suppliers and delivery drivers there. Local marketplaces, ride-hailing and food delivery apps, and many online stores also expect a +52 number at sign-up.

Mexico has changed its phone rules twice in recent years: dialing moved to a single 10-digit format in 2019, and mobile lines have had to be linked to an identified person since January 2026. This guide explains both, compares the realistic ways to get a Mexican number from abroad, and shows the fastest route to a real Mexican mobile number.

01

How Mexican phone numbers work

Mexico's country code is +52. Since 3 August 2019, when the telecom regulator of the time, the IFT, introduced 10-digit dialing, every Mexican number, mobile or landline, is dialed as 10 digits anywhere in the country. The old domestic prefixes 01, 044 and 045 were eliminated.

The first two or three digits are the area code, such as 55 for Mexico City, 33 for Guadalajara or 81 for Monterrey, followed by the local number. Mobile numbers use the same area codes as landlines, so you can't tell from the digits alone whether a Mexican number is a mobile.

There is no trunk prefix to drop. A Mexican mobile is written 55 1234 5678 at home and +52 55 1234 5678 internationally.

Country code
+52
Number length
10 digits for every number, mobile or fixed
Area code
2 or 3 digits, e.g. 55 Mexico City, 33 Guadalajara, 81 Monterrey
Mobile format (international)
+52 XX XXXX XXXX
Trunk prefix
None since 2019; 01, 044 and 045 are no longer dialed
Main time zone
Central Mexico, UTC−6, no daylight saving in most of the country
02

Why you shouldn't write +52 1 anymore

For years, callers from abroad had to add a 1 after +52 to reach a Mexican mobile, and you still see +52 1 in old contact lists and guides. The IFT's questions and answers on the 2019 change say that calls from abroad to mobiles are now dialed as 52 plus the 10 digits, without the 1.

For sign-up forms, that means a Mexican mobile is always +52 followed by exactly 10 digits. An extra 1 makes an 11-digit number that many forms reject or that fails to receive the code.

03

Mobile line registration since 2026

Mexico's telecom regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), issued guidelines on identifying mobile lines. From 9 January 2026, mobile lines are linked to an identified person, and CRT says that linking a line requires official identification, such as a voter card or passport, and a CURP, Mexico's population registry code. Registration is done with the phone companies, not a government office.

Deadlines and the details for foreign visitors without a CURP are set out in CRT's guidelines and handled by each operator, and they have been adjusted during 2026. If you plan to use a Mexican SIM, check your operator's current registration steps when you buy it.

04

Your options, compared

Roaming your home SIM
Keeps your usual number, but it is not +52, so Mexican forms that require a local number reject it
Mexican prepaid SIM
A genuine Mexican line; must be linked to your identity under the 2026 rules, needs a phone to stay active
eSIM data plan
Easy data on arrival, but most travel eSIMs include no Mexican number
VoIP app number
Quick to get, but not a Mexican mobile, and many apps refuse internet numbers for verification
Real mobile number online
A +52 mobile number in a web dashboard; no SIM, no CURP, ready before you travel

Where a Mexican number helps

Mexican bank accounts and services tied to your identity generally expect a line registered in your name. For those, a SIM registered with your own documents is the right tool.

  • WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for Mexican customers, who expect to message a business on a local number.
  • Ride-hailing, food delivery and e-commerce apps that send login codes by SMS.
  • Renting an apartment or a car, where landlords and agencies call or message a local number.
  • Remote workers and digital nomads in Mexico City, Guadalajara or the Riviera Maya who want a stable local contact.
  • Businesses selling into Mexico that want a +52 number on their website and ads.
  • Keeping a Mexican number after moving away, so friends and accounts can still reach you.

Tips for Mexican numbers

  • Use +52 and 10 digits. Don't add the old mobile 1, and don't add 044, 045 or 01.
  • If a form has a Mexico country picker, type only the 10 digits, including the area code.
  • If an app shows a Mexican number with +52 1, that is an old format; the 10 digits after it are what matters.
  • If you share your number with Mexican contacts, give them the 10 digits; from a Mexican phone they dial exactly those 10 digits, with no prefix.
  • Most of Mexico, including Mexico City, is on UTC−6 all year after daylight saving was ended in 2022; Quintana Roo (Cancún) is on UTC−5, the Pacific states on UTC−7, and some border areas still change their clocks.
  • If a code is slow, wait a minute before requesting another, or use a voice call if offered. Incoming calls are unlimited.
  • Keep the number renewed so apps can send you a code when you log in on a new device.

When SMSCreation is not the right choice

If you live in Mexico and need a line registered to your own identity, for a bank account or other identity-linked services, get a SIM from a Mexican operator and complete its registration. If you only need data for a short holiday in Cancún or Mexico City, an eSIM data plan is simpler.

SMSCreation is for people who want a real Mexican mobile number for WhatsApp, verification codes and business contacts that stays reachable from abroad, with no SIM and no local paperwork.

09

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google

Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.

And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.

  • Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
  • Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
  • Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
  • Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
  • Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
10

Price, keeping your number and the 7-day guarantee

A Mexican number costs the same as any other country: from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing call minutes a month.

It stays yours as long as you renew it. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Telegram, Google or another app, you get a free replacement in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a full refund if you prefer.

Questions

Do I need to add a 1 after +52 for Mexican mobiles?

No. Since the 2019 change to 10-digit dialing, the IFT says calls from abroad to Mexican mobiles are dialed as 52 plus the 10 digits, with no 1.

How many digits does a Mexican phone number have?

Ten, for both mobiles and landlines. Internationally it is +52 followed by those 10 digits, for example +52 55 1234 5678.

Can I tell if a Mexican number is a mobile?

Not from the digits. Mobiles and landlines share the same area codes and 10-digit format.

Do I need a CURP to get a Mexican number?

CRT's 2026 guidelines ask for official ID and a CURP to link a Mexican SIM line, with operators handling visitors. An SMSCreation +52 number needs only an email address and crypto payment.

Can I get a Mexican number before moving to Mexico?

Yes. An online number is activated in your dashboard right after payment, so you can share it with landlords and employers before you arrive.

Can I use a Mexican number for WhatsApp?

Yes. SMSCreation numbers work with WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, with a free replacement or refund within 7 days if the number doesn't work.

Which Mexican area code will my number have?

Numbers are listed with their real area code, such as 55 for Mexico City. For app verification any Mexican mobile works the same way, so choose the city that matters to your contacts if you have a preference.

How much does a Mexican number cost?

From $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), the same price as every other country.

Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?

Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
