WhatsApp says your phone number is not valid: what it means and how to fix it
Few things are more frustrating than typing your number into WhatsApp and being told it isn't valid — or getting past that screen only to find the number can't be registered at all. The good news: most cases come down to a handful of causes, and the first few take seconds to fix.
This guide separates the situations that look alike on screen but have different fixes: a formatting mistake, a number type WhatsApp doesn't support, a wait imposed after too many attempts, and a number that has been banned. For each one you'll see what WhatsApp's own help centre says and what you can actually do about it.
Work through the checklist in order. The early steps are free and instant; the later ones — contacting WhatsApp or switching to a different number — only make sense once you've ruled out the simple causes.
What the error really means
WhatsApp registers accounts by phone number. Before it sends a 6-digit code, it checks that the number you typed looks like a real number for the country you selected, and that it's a type of number WhatsApp accepts. If either check fails, you'll see a message that the number isn't valid, or registration simply won't complete.
That check happens before any SMS is sent, so a “not valid” message is almost never a delivery problem. It's about what you entered or what kind of number it is. If the number is accepted but the code never arrives, that's a different problem — see our guide on verification codes that don't arrive.
A third situation looks similar but isn't a validity problem at all: a banned number. WhatsApp's help centre says a banned account sees a message that the phone number can't use WhatsApp, with an option to request a review. That one has its own fix, covered below.
Cause 1: the number isn't in full international format
This is by far the most common cause. WhatsApp's help centre asks you to enter your full international phone number, including the country code, and to remove any leading zeros or exit codes. Its own example of a US number is + 1 408 XXX-XXXX.
In practice that means three things. Pick the right country in the dropdown so WhatsApp adds the correct country code. Don't type the country code again in the number field. And drop the domestic trunk prefix — the 0 that many countries put in front of mobile numbers when you dial locally.
- UK mobile dialed locally
- 07700 900123
- UK mobile in WhatsApp
- +44 7700 900123 (drop the 0)
- German mobile dialed locally
- 0151 23456789
- German mobile in WhatsApp
- +49 151 23456789 (drop the 0)
- Exit codes to remove
- 00 or 011 before the country code
- Common mistake
- +44 44 7700… — country code typed twice
Cause 2: the number type isn't supported
Some numbers can never be registered, however carefully you type them. WhatsApp's help centre lists unsupported number types, including VoIP numbers, toll-free numbers, paid premium numbers, universal access numbers (UAN), shared cost and personal numbers. Its note on the “invalid number” article is blunt: VoIP numbers aren't supported.
Landlines are a special case. WhatsApp says landlines can only be used with the WhatsApp Business app, where the code arrives by phone call, and that landline extension numbers can't be used at all. Regular WhatsApp needs a mobile number.
If you picked up a number from an internet calling service or a free online inbox, this is the likely cause — and no amount of reformatting will fix it. You need a real mobile number.
Cause 3: too many attempts or guesses
WhatsApp applies waiting periods to protect accounts. Its help centre warns not to guess the code, or you'll be locked out for a period of time, and says you may see the message “You have guessed the code too many times.” after entering wrong codes. It also says the timer before you can retry might take up to 10 minutes.
WhatsApp is clear that there's no way to make the wait shorter. It also warns that if you frequently switch your account between different devices, you may be blocked from re-verifying. The fix is patience: stop requesting codes, wait for the timer, then try once with the correct number.
Cause 4: the number is banned
If WhatsApp tells you the phone number can't use WhatsApp, the number has been banned — it isn't a format problem. WhatsApp's help centre says you can tap Request review in the app, that most reviews are completed within 24 hours, and that if you don't see the review option, the ban is final and can't be appealed.
WhatsApp also says that contacting support by email or chat can't reverse a ban, and that third-party services can't ban or unban an account. Be wary of anyone offering to “unban” a number for a fee.
A ban can also be inherited: a recycled number may carry the history of its previous owner. If you've just been given a number and it's banned before you've ever used it, request a review if the option exists; otherwise a different number is the realistic fix.
Fix checklist, step by step
- 01Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the official app store, then restart your phone.
- 02Select the number's country in the dropdown, then type the number without the leading 0, without 00 or 011, and without repeating the country code.
- 03Read the number back digit by digit — a single swapped digit produces a valid-looking but wrong number.
- 04Confirm the number type: it must be a mobile number (or, for WhatsApp Business only, a landline without an extension) — not VoIP, toll-free or premium.
- 05Check the number can actually receive SMS or calls: send it a text from another phone. On a prepaid line, WhatsApp says to confirm you have enough balance; abroad, roaming must be on.
- 06If you've made several attempts, stop and wait for the timer to finish — up to 10 minutes, and longer after wrong guesses.
- 07If the screen says the number can't use WhatsApp, tap Request review if it's offered and wait for the decision.
- 08Still rejected after all of the above? Contact WhatsApp support, or move to a different real mobile number.
When to contact WhatsApp support
Contact WhatsApp when the number is correctly formatted, is a real mobile number, can receive SMS and calls, and is still rejected. WhatsApp's help centre says to go to the Contact WhatsApp page on its website, tap contact us under WhatsApp Support, and fill in the form with your number in full international format and a description of the problem. Replies come from an address ending in @support.whatsapp.com.
Include the exact country and number, what you see on screen, and roughly when you tried. Don't contact support to speed up a waiting timer or to reverse a ban — WhatsApp says neither can be changed that way; bans go through Request review in the app.
If the number came from SMSCreation and it's the code delivery rather than WhatsApp's validity check that fails, open a ticket from your dashboard with the time you requested the code.
When a different number is the real fix
Sometimes the number itself is the problem: it's a VoIP or other unsupported type, it's permanently banned with no review option, or WhatsApp keeps refusing it without explanation. In those cases, a different real mobile number is faster than waiting for a change that may never come.
An SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in the country's official mobile format, which is the type WhatsApp's help centre says it supports. And it's covered by our 7-day replacement guarantee: if the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, you get a free replacement number in the same country within 7 days of activation — or a 100% refund if you prefer.
Be honest about the cause first, though. If WhatsApp banned you for breaking its rules, a new number isn't a way around that, and WhatsApp's Terms of Service apply to every account you register.
Avoid it next time
- Save your number in full international format in your notes, so you always enter it the same way.
- Turn on two-step verification and add an email address in WhatsApp's settings; WhatsApp says an email code can help when you re-register an existing account.
- Don't hop the account between phones repeatedly — WhatsApp may block re-verification.
- Keep the number active and renewed, so you can receive a code whenever WhatsApp asks for one.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Price, keeping the number and the 7-day guarantee
A real mobile number for WhatsApp costs from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), in any of 181 countries. It includes unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, and it stays yours as long as you keep renewing it.
If the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, you get a free replacement in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a full refund if you prefer. And if you haven't used it for any call or SMS, you can get a no-questions-asked refund within 7 days.
Questions
Why does WhatsApp say my phone number is not valid?
Usually because of the format: the wrong country is selected, the leading 0 wasn't removed, or the country code was typed twice. It can also mean the number is an unsupported type, such as VoIP.
Should I include the 0 at the start of my number?
No. WhatsApp's help centre says to remove leading zeros and exit codes and to enter the number in full international format, starting with the country code.
Can I use a VoIP or landline number on WhatsApp?
VoIP numbers aren't supported. Landlines without an extension can be used only with the WhatsApp Business app, which delivers the code by phone call.
How long do I have to wait after too many attempts?
WhatsApp says the retry timer can take up to 10 minutes, and wrong guesses lock you out for a period of time. There's no way to make the wait shorter.
My number is banned. Can support unban it?
WhatsApp says bans are reviewed only through Request review in the app, and that emailing or chatting with support can't reverse one. If there's no review option, the ban is final.
How do I contact WhatsApp about an invalid number?
Use the contact form on WhatsApp's website under WhatsApp Support. Include your number in full international format and describe the problem.
What if my SMSCreation number doesn't work with WhatsApp?
Our 7-day replacement guarantee applies: a free replacement number in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a 100% refund if you prefer.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
