The +44 07 mistake, and the other UK formatting traps

OpenAI's verification screen opens with the United States selected, so the first job is switching the dropdown to United Kingdom. The second is dropping the trunk 0. A UK mobile written at home as 07400 123456 has eleven digits; after +44 it has ten, starting with 7. Typing +44 07400 123456 gives the form a number no UK network recognises.

It also helps to know which 07 numbers are genuine mobiles. Ofcom sets aside 070 for personal numbering and 076 for pagers, and verification systems often refuse them. Real mobile ranges sit in 071–075 and 077–079, which is where SMSCreation's UK numbers come from.

Living with a phone-only account on a UK number

A ChatGPT account created with only a +44 number behaves a little differently. OpenAI says the password is reset by SMS, and only from a device you have already used to log in at least once. You can't switch on multi-factor authentication until you've linked an email, which you add on the web under Settings → Account → Email → Add.

Upgrading to a paid plan also needs a verified email, according to OpenAI. After you link one, you can move the account to Google, Apple or Microsoft login if you prefer. Throughout, the UK number stays attached, because OpenAI offers no way to change it.
