Phone number & verification glossary
Phone numbers, verification codes and crypto payments each come with their own jargon. This page collects the terms in one place and explains each in a sentence or two, without assuming any technical background.
Where a term relates to how SMSCreation works, the definition says so. For formats and dialing rules in detail, see our guide to international dialing codes and the mobile number formats reference.
Numbers & formats
- Country code
- The 1–3 digit prefix that identifies a country in international dialing, such as +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK or +91 for India.
- E.164
- The international standard for writing phone numbers: a plus sign, the country code and the national number, with no spaces or leading 0 — at most 15 digits, for example +447700900123.
- National significant number (NSN)
- The part of a phone number after the country code, without any trunk prefix. Its length varies by country, typically 7 to 12 digits.
- Area code
- A prefix inside the national number that identifies a geographic region, such as 212 for New York City. In many countries mobile numbers use mobile prefixes instead of area codes.
- Mobile number
- A number assigned from a country's mobile range and served by a mobile network, able to send and receive SMS and calls. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format.
- Landline
- A fixed-line number tied to a location. Most landlines cannot receive SMS, which is why sign-up forms reject them for text verification.
- VoIP number
- A number delivered over the internet by a voice-over-IP provider, often called a virtual number. Many services classify VoIP and virtual numbers as a separate line type and restrict them for verification; they are a different category from real mobile numbers.
- Non-VoIP number
- A number that is not delivered over VoIP: a real mobile number from a country's mobile range, so line-type lookups report it as a mobile line. Apps that block VoIP numbers for verification accept non-VoIP numbers. Every SMSCreation number is a non-VoIP real mobile number.
- Virtual number
- A common marketing term for numbers not linked to a physical SIM, usually VoIP numbers. SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers, not VoIP or virtual numbers.
- Exit (international) prefix
- The digits you dial to leave your own country before the country code: 00 in most countries, 011 in the US and Canada. On a mobile, typing + replaces it.
- Trunk prefix
- The digit dialed before a national number for domestic calls, usually 0 (as in UK 07700 900123). It is dropped in international format.
- Short code
- A 4–6 digit number used by businesses and services to send bulk or automated texts, including many verification codes. Short codes work only within their own country.
Verification & security
- OTP (one-time password)
- A short code, usually 4–8 digits, that is valid for one use and a few minutes. Services send it by SMS or voice call to prove you control a number.
- 2FA (two-factor authentication)
- A login that needs two proofs, typically your password plus a code sent to your phone. Keeping the same number keeps SMS-based 2FA working.
- SMS verification
- Confirming a phone number by texting it a code that you type back into the service. With SMSCreation, the code appears in your dashboard's SMS inbox.
- Voice verification
- The same check done by an automated call that reads the code aloud. SMSCreation numbers include unlimited incoming calls, so voice codes are covered.
- Line-type lookup
- A check many services run before sending a code, to see whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP. Numbers that fail it may be refused.
- Rate limit
- A cap on how many codes a service will send in a short time. Requesting codes repeatedly can trigger a temporary block.
- Recovery phone
- A phone number saved on an account so the service can send a code if you forget your password or get locked out.
- Account recovery
- The process of regaining access to an account, often by receiving a code on the recovery phone. It only works if you still control that number.
- Re-verification
- When a service asks you to confirm your number again, for example after a new device login. It is the main reason to keep a verification number long term.
Messaging & calls
- SMS
- Short Message Service: plain text messages of up to 160 characters per segment, sent over mobile networks. SMSCreation numbers include unlimited incoming SMS and 500 outgoing SMS a month.
- Sender ID
- The name or number shown as the sender of a text, such as a brand name or short code. Some countries require sender IDs to be registered.
- SIM
- Subscriber Identity Module: the chip card that links a phone to a mobile network account. SMSCreation numbers are used from a web dashboard, so no SIM is needed to read messages.
- eSIM
- A SIM built into the phone and activated by download instead of a plastic card. Travelers often use a local data eSIM for internet access.
- Roaming
- Using your home mobile plan on a foreign network, often at extra cost. Reading SMS in a web dashboard avoids roaming for incoming messages.
- Outgoing minutes
- Call time you use when you place a call. Every SMSCreation number includes 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, placed from the browser.
- Spam and robocalls
- Unwanted marketing texts and automated calls. Using a separate number for sign-ups keeps them away from your personal SIM.
- Local presence
- Having a phone number in the same country as your customers or contacts, so they can reach you at domestic rates.
Payments & crypto
- Stablecoin
- A cryptocurrency designed to hold a steady value, usually pegged to the US dollar. SMSCreation accepts only stablecoins, so prices don't swing.
- USDT
- Tether, a US-dollar stablecoin available on many blockchains. Accepted by SMSCreation on Tron, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Base and Solana.
- USDC
- USD Coin, a US-dollar stablecoin issued by Circle. Accepted by SMSCreation on several of the same networks.
- TRC-20
- The token standard on the Tron blockchain. USDT on TRC-20 is widely used for low-fee transfers.
- BEP-20
- The token standard on BNB Smart Chain, the blockchain run by the BNB ecosystem.
- Polygon
- A blockchain network compatible with Ethereum tools, known for low fees. SMSCreation accepts stablecoins on it.
- Solana
- A high-speed blockchain with its own token standard. SMSCreation accepts stablecoins on Solana.
- Base
- A low-fee blockchain network built on Ethereum technology. One of the networks SMSCreation accepts.
- Wallet address
- The public string of characters that identifies where crypto should be sent. Always send on the same network the address belongs to.
- Transaction hash
- The unique ID of a blockchain transaction, used to look it up in a block explorer. Payment records at SMSCreation include it.
- Network fee
- The small fee paid to the blockchain to process a transfer, also called gas. It is paid by the sender and varies by network.
- Exact amount matching
- SMSCreation gives each payment a unique exact amount and matches it on-chain, so send precisely the amount shown.
Privacy & accounts
- KYC (know your customer)
- Identity checks such as ID, passport, selfie or proof of address. SMSCreation does no KYC — sign-up needs only an email address.
- Number masking
- Hiding part of a number. SMSCreation lists available numbers with the first two and last two digits shown as XX; those digits are assigned when the number is activated.
- Auto-renew
- Automatic renewal of a number when its term ends, paid from your SMSCreation wallet balance, so the number doesn't lapse.
- Wallet balance
- Prepaid funds in your SMSCreation account, topped up in crypto and used to buy or renew numbers instantly.
- Number recycling
- When a carrier reassigns a cancelled number to a new user, who may then receive codes meant for the old owner. Keeping your number renewed prevents this for your accounts.
- Money-back guarantee
- SMSCreation refunds within 7 days, no questions asked, as long as the number has not been used for any call or SMS.
- Bot protection
- Measures that stop automated sign-ups and logins. SMSCreation uses Cloudflare Turnstile.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Put the terms to work
Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in any of 181 countries, from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly). Keep it as long as you want, and if it isn't right, the 7-day money-back guarantee applies as long as the number has not been used for any call or SMS.
Questions
What is the difference between a country code and an area code?
A country code identifies the country (+44 for the UK); an area code identifies a region inside it. Mobile numbers in many countries use mobile prefixes instead of area codes.
What does E.164 format look like?
A plus sign, the country code and the national number with no spaces and no leading 0, for example +14155550123.
Is an OTP the same as 2FA?
Not quite. An OTP is the code itself; 2FA is the login method that asks for it on top of your password.
What is the difference between a VoIP number and a mobile number?
A VoIP number runs over an internet calling service and is often restricted for verification. A mobile number comes from a country's mobile range; SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers.
What is KYC?
Know your customer — identity checks such as ID or proof of address. SMSCreation does no KYC.
Which network should I use to pay?
Any of Tron (TRC-20), Polygon, BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), Base or Solana, with USDT or USDC. Just send on the network the payment address belongs to.
Why are some digits shown as XX?
SMSCreation lists numbers with the first two and last two digits masked; they are assigned when the number is activated.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
