Telegram code not received: where it went and how to fix it

Telegram's login code isn't always a text message. That single fact explains a large share of “I never got the code” complaints: the code was sent, just not where people were looking.

This guide walks through where Telegram actually sends codes, what its own FAQ says about SMS, phone calls and number types, and the checks that fix the problem in most cases. It also covers when to contact Telegram, and when the number itself is the thing to change.

Keep in mind that Telegram doesn't publish exact waiting times or attempt limits, so anything you read that quotes precise numbers is guesswork. We stick to what Telegram documents and to general advice that works across apps.

01

Where Telegram sends your code

Telegram's FAQ says that if you have recently used one of its apps on another device — or even a different app on the same device — it may send the login code via Telegram instead of SMS. You'll find it in the chat with Telegram, a verified profile with a blue check.

So before anything else, open Telegram on every phone, tablet or computer where you might still be logged in, and look for a new message from the official Telegram account. That's the most common place for a “missing” code.

If you have no active session anywhere — a brand-new account, or a lost phone — the code goes to your number by SMS. The login screen shows which method was used; read it carefully before you request another code.

Logged in on another device
Code arrives in the chat with the verified Telegram account
No other active session
Code is sent to your number by SMS
Phone call with the code
Only for accounts with two-step verification enabled
Passkey set up
Log in with device PIN, fingerprint or face scan instead of a code
Landline numbers
Not supported — Telegram needs a mobile number
02

What about a phone call?

Many apps fall back to a voice call when SMS fails. Telegram is more restrictive: its FAQ says that, for security reasons, login codes dictated via a phone call are only available for accounts that have two-step verification enabled (Settings > Privacy & Security > Two-Step Verification).

If you're creating a new account, or your existing account doesn't have two-step verification, don't expect a call option. That's one more reason to turn two-step verification on once you're back in.

03

Why the SMS may not arrive

  • Wrong format. Telegram's FAQ asks you to enter your number in international format: +(country code)(city or carrier code)(your number). Don't add the domestic leading 0.
  • Wrong number type. Telegram's FAQ says accounts can only be connected to a mobile number and that landlines aren't supported.
  • The code went to Telegram instead. If any session is still active somewhere, the code may be waiting in the Telegram chat, not in your SMS inbox.
  • Too many requests. Like most apps, Telegram makes you wait between requests, and repeated requests can lengthen the wait. Telegram doesn't publish the exact limits.
  • Carrier or route delays. International SMS passes through several networks and can be delayed or filtered. A late code is often still valid, so wait a few minutes before requesting again.
  • Phone-side blocking. Spam filters, blocked senders or a full inbox on a physical phone can hide the message.
04

Fix checklist, step by step

  1. 01Open Telegram on every other device where you may be logged in and check the chat with the verified Telegram account for the code.
  2. 02Make sure you're using an official Telegram app, updated to the latest version from the official store or telegram.org.
  3. 03Check the number: correct country, international format, no leading 0, and a mobile number rather than a landline.
  4. 04Confirm the number can receive SMS — send it a test text from another phone. Abroad, make sure roaming SMS works on a physical SIM.
  5. 05Wait for the on-screen timer to run out completely before requesting again, and request only once.
  6. 06If the screen offers another way to get the code, read it and use it; a phone call appears only for accounts with two-step verification.
  7. 07Always enter the newest code you received; older codes may no longer work.
  8. 08Still nothing? Stop requesting for a while, try again later, and if it keeps failing, contact Telegram's login support.
05

When to contact Telegram support

Telegram's FAQ says that if you're having registration or login problems, or can't log in to your account, you should use its dedicated login support form on the telegram.org support page. For other questions, logged-in users can go to Settings — Ask a question. Telegram notes that it relies on volunteers for support, so replies may take time.

Describe the problem precisely: the number in international format, the country, which delivery method the login screen showed, and when you tried. Contact support only after the checklist above; repeated form submissions won't speed things up.

If you use an SMSCreation number and Telegram says it sent an SMS that never appeared in your inbox, open a ticket from your dashboard with the time of the request so we can check the delivery.

06

When the number itself is the problem

If Telegram refuses the number outright, or you've lost the SIM your account was registered with, a different number may be the only way forward. Telegram's FAQ warns that codes sent via Telegram shouldn't be treated as an alternative to an up-to-date phone number, and that if your number changes you should make sure Telegram is connected to a number you control — otherwise you risk losing access to your account forever.

A real mobile number from SMSCreation is a mobile number in the country's official format, which fits Telegram's mobile-only rule, and you read codes in a web dashboard from anywhere. It's covered by our 7-day replacement guarantee: if the number doesn't work with Telegram, you get a free replacement number in the same country within 7 days of activation — or a 100% refund if you prefer.

It's not the right tool if your old number is still active and simply slow: in that case, wait and retry instead of changing numbers.

07

Stop this happening again

  • Enable two-step verification (Settings > Privacy and Security > 2-Step Verification) and add a recovery email address.
  • Set up a passkey: Telegram's FAQ says passkeys let you log in with your device's PIN, fingerprint or face scan instead of an SMS code.
  • Stay logged in on a second device, such as Telegram Desktop, so future codes can reach you inside Telegram.
  • Keep your number active. Telegram's FAQ says accounts self-destruct after a period of inactivity — 18 months by default — and a number you control is your way back in.
08

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google

Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.

And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.

  • Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
  • Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
  • Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
  • Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
  • Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
09

Price, keeping the number and the 7-day guarantee

A real mobile number for Telegram costs from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), in any of 181 countries. Every plan includes unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, and the number stays yours as long as you keep renewing it.

If it doesn't work with Telegram, you get a free replacement in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a full refund if you prefer. If you haven't used it for any call or SMS, a no-questions-asked refund is available within 7 days.

Questions

Why didn't I get a Telegram code by SMS?

If you're logged in on another device, Telegram may send the code there instead, in the chat with the verified Telegram account. Check that first.

Can Telegram call me with the code?

Telegram's FAQ says codes dictated by phone call are only available for accounts with two-step verification enabled.

Does Telegram work with landline numbers?

No. Telegram's FAQ says accounts can only be connected to a mobile number and that landline numbers aren't supported.

How long should I wait before requesting a new code?

Wait until the on-screen timer ends, then request once. Telegram doesn't publish exact limits, and repeated requests can make the wait longer.

How do I contact Telegram about login problems?

Use the login support form on telegram.org's support page. If you're logged in, you can also go to Settings — Ask a question.

Can I log in to Telegram without an SMS code?

Yes, if you set one up earlier: Telegram supports passkeys, and codes can arrive in Telegram on another logged-in device.

What if my SMSCreation number doesn't work with Telegram?

You get a free replacement number in the same country within 7 days of activation, or a 100% refund if you prefer.

Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?

Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
