Verification code not received? 14 causes and how to fix them

You enter your phone number, tap “send code,” and nothing arrives. Then you tap resend, and still nothing. It's one of the most common and frustrating sign-up problems, and it happens with every kind of phone number.

The good news: the cause is usually one of a dozen predictable issues, and most can be fixed in minutes. This guide lists 14 causes with concrete fixes, followed by a checklist you can run through in order.

01

Number and input problems

  • 1. Wrong country code. The code went to a different country. Fix: select the right country in the dropdown, or type the full international format, such as +44 7700 900123 or +1 201 555 0123.
  • 2. Extra trunk zero. Many countries use a leading 0 domestically that must be dropped internationally. +44 07… or +49 017… is invalid. Fix: remove the 0 after the country code.
  • 3. Typo or duplicated country code. A missing digit, swapped digits, or +1 typed in the number field when the dropdown already adds +1. Fix: read the number back digit by digit before resending.
  • 4. Number type rejected. Some apps silently refuse to send codes to VoIP, landline or flagged numbers. Fix: use a real mobile number for verification.
02

Limits on the app's side

  • 5. Resend cooldown. Apps often lock the resend button for 30 seconds to several minutes, and each resend may extend the wait. Fix: let the timer finish fully, then request once.
  • 6. Rate limits. Several requests in a short time can block the number, the device or the IP address for hours. Fix: stop requesting and try again later — often after a few hours, occasionally the next day.
  • 7. Too many failed attempts. Entering wrong codes repeatedly can lock verification. Fix: wait for the lockout to expire and make sure you enter only the most recent code.
  • 8. Expired or superseded code. Codes typically expire after a few minutes, and a new request usually invalidates the old one. Fix: always use the newest code and enter it promptly.
  • 9. Region restrictions. Some apps don't support sign-ups in certain countries, or require the number's country to match your app store region or location. Fix: check the app's supported countries and use a number from a supported country.
03

Delivery problems

  • 10. Carrier or sender filtering. Operators filter A2P messages from unregistered senders or content that looks like spam, and some messages are dropped without a trace. Fix: choose the voice-call option if offered, or try again later when a different route may be used.
  • 11. Temporary delivery delay. International SMS travels through several networks and can be delayed during peak traffic. Fix: wait a few minutes before resending — a late code is often still valid.
  • 12. SMS not selected. Some apps send the code inside the app on another logged-in device, by email, or by WhatsApp rather than SMS. Fix: read the screen carefully and look for “send by SMS” or “try another way.”
04

Device and app problems

  • 13. Old app version. Outdated apps sometimes use retired verification flows. Fix: update the app from the official store, or sign up through the website instead.
  • 14. Blocking settings on the receiving phone. Spam filters, blocked senders or a full inbox on a physical phone can hide codes. Fix: check the spam or unknown-senders folder and remove sender blocks. On a web dashboard, refresh the inbox.
05

Choose a voice call when SMS fails

Many services offer a “call me” option after an SMS attempt. A voice code travels over a different path from an A2P message, so it can succeed when SMS filtering is the problem. The call is usually automated and reads the code aloud, sometimes twice.

If your number can receive calls wherever you are, this is often the fastest fix. SMSCreation numbers include unlimited incoming calls as well as unlimited incoming SMS, so choosing the call option costs you nothing extra.

06

How long to wait before trying again

Before the first resend
At least 60 seconds, or until the timer ends
After two or three failed resends
Stop and wait 30–60 minutes
After a “too many attempts” message
Several hours, often up to 24
After an account-level block
Contact the service's support; retrying rarely helps
07

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. 01Confirm the number in full international format: + country code, no trunk 0, no duplicate code.
  2. 02Check that the country selected in the form matches the number's country.
  3. 03Wait for the resend timer to end completely before requesting a new code.
  4. 04Look for other delivery options: voice call, email, or another logged-in device.
  5. 05Check the inbox, spam folder or dashboard, and refresh.
  6. 06Update the app, or try the service's website instead.
  7. 07If you've requested several codes, stop for at least 30–60 minutes.
  8. 08Make sure the number is a mobile number the service accepts, not a VoIP or landline number.
  9. 09Check whether the service supports your country and the number's country.
  10. 10Still stuck: contact the service's support with the time of your attempts and the exact error shown.
08

When to contact support

If you see a clear block message — “this number cannot be used,” “try again later” after a full day, or an account restriction — more retries won't help. Contact the app's support and include the number in international format, the country, the time of your attempts and screenshots of any errors.

If you use an SMSCreation number and a code doesn't appear in your dashboard, open a support ticket from the dashboard or email support@smscreation.com with the service name and the time of the request.

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google

Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.

And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.

  • Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
  • Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
  • Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
  • Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
  • Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working

A reliable number for verification

Many verification failures come down to the number itself: wrong type, shared by others, or no longer yours. SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers in 181 countries with unlimited incoming SMS and unlimited incoming calls, so you can retry by SMS or voice without worrying about limits on your side. They cost from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), stay yours as long as you keep them renewed, and can be refunded within 7 days if the number hasn't been used for any call or SMS.

Questions

Why am I not getting my verification code?

The most common reasons are a wrong country code or extra 0, too many resend requests, carrier filtering, or the app rejecting the number type. Check the format first, then wait and try the voice option.

How long does a verification code take to arrive?

Usually seconds, but international SMS can take a few minutes. Wait at least a minute before resending.

Does pressing resend many times help?

No. Repeated requests can trigger rate limits that block the number for hours. Wait for the timer and request once.

Why does the app say to try again later?

You've hit a rate limit or security limit. Stop requesting codes and try again after several hours.

Can a verification code come by phone call?

Yes, many services offer a voice call option that reads the code aloud. It often works when SMS delivery fails.

Why do some apps reject my number entirely?

Many apps check the line type and block VoIP or flagged numbers, and some restrict sign-ups by country. A real mobile number from a supported country avoids most of these issues.

Do SMSCreation numbers limit incoming codes?

No. Incoming SMS and incoming calls are unlimited on every plan, and codes appear in the dashboard as soon as they arrive.

Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?

Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
