A US mobile number for ChatGPT and OpenAI verification
The United States is one of the countries where OpenAI rolled out phone-only sign-up, so a +1 mobile can be the entire login for a ChatGPT account, with no email attached at the start. It is also the country the verification screen assumes by default, which makes a US number the path with the fewest surprises.
What makes OpenAI different from most apps is how permanent the choice is. The number you verify with cannot be swapped out afterwards, and each number has a hard cap on how often it can be used for verification. A US number you control and keep paying for sidesteps both problems.
This page covers when OpenAI will ask a US user for a number, how to type a +1 number so the form accepts it, what changes on a phone-only account, and what an SMSCreation US number includes.
Why people pick a US number for their OpenAI account
Most US apps already treat the mobile number as an identity check, and OpenAI goes further: new users in the United States can sign up to ChatGPT with a phone number alone. If you live outside the US but work with American teams, or you simply want your AI account to sit on a line that isn't your personal SIM, a US mobile gives you that without a carrier contract.
There is a practical reason too. A ChatGPT account often outlives a phone plan. People switch carriers, hand back a work handset or let a prepaid line lapse, and with OpenAI that can lock them out of SMS password resets. A dedicated US number that exists only for this purpose is easier to keep alive for years.
When OpenAI will ask for your +1 number
OpenAI's help centre says a phone number is not generally required to create an account or use ChatGPT. With a US number you are most likely to meet the prompt in one of these moments.
- Phone-only sign-up, which OpenAI lists as available to new users in the United States.
- Opening Codex inside the ChatGPT desktop app, where OpenAI says an email or authenticator app does not replace the phone step.
- Generating your very first developer key on platform.openai.com; later keys do not need it.
- Choosing text-message multi-factor authentication, which sends a 6-digit code to the number at sign-in.
Pick your United States number
These United States numbers are listed right now (31 in total). Choose one on the country page; the hidden digits are assigned when your order is approved and the number is activated.
Typing a US number the way OpenAI expects
US numbers follow the North American Numbering Plan: +1, a three-digit area code and a seven-digit subscriber number, ten digits after the country code. There is no trunk 0 to worry about, but there is an equivalent trap. Because the country field already supplies +1, typing 1 201 555 0123 turns a valid ten-digit number into eleven digits, and the form may reject it or read it wrong.
The verification screen's country dropdown starts on the United States, so for a US number you normally leave it alone and type only the ten digits. Canada shares +1, but its area codes are Canadian; an SMSCreation US number carries a US area code.
- Country code
- +1 (pre-selected on OpenAI's screen)
- What you type
- 10 digits: area code + 7 digits
- Example
- 201 555 0123, not 1 201 555 0123
- Full international form
- +1 201 555 0123
- Code channel for US numbers
- SMS (the United States isn't on OpenAI's WhatsApp list)
How codes arrive and when OpenAI asks again
OpenAI delivers verification codes by SMS, or by WhatsApp only in a short list of countries that does not include the US. It states it cannot send them by email or voice call. So for a +1 number, the code is a text message, and with an SMSCreation number it lands in the SMS inbox of your web dashboard.
Re-verification is where a phone-only account leans on the number. OpenAI says password resets on such an account happen by SMS and require a device you have already used to log in at least once. If you picked text-message MFA, every protected sign-in sends a fresh 6-digit code to the same US number.
Step by step: a ChatGPT account on a US number
- 01Buy a US number in SMSCreation and wait for it to appear in your dashboard with its full digits.
- 02Start sign-up or the verification prompt in ChatGPT, or on platform.openai.com for your first developer key.
- 03Leave the country on United States and type the ten digits, with no leading 1.
- 04Open the SMS inbox in your dashboard and copy the code into OpenAI's screen.
- 05On a phone-only account, add an email under Settings → Account → Email so you can enable MFA and upgrade later.
- 06Turn on multi-factor authentication under Settings → Security and login.
- 07Keep auto-renew on so the number stays yours for future codes.
Honest limits before you verify
- The number is permanent on the account: OpenAI offers no way to change or update it, for ChatGPT or the developer platform.
- Three verifications per number, ever. Once a number has been used for verification, it cannot create another new account.
- “Too many signups with this number” means OpenAI has already seen it, possibly from a previous holder, and OpenAI says there is no workaround.
- A phone-only account needs a linked email before you can upgrade to a paid plan or enable MFA.
- “Unsupported country” is about where you are accessing from, not the +1 number.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Price, keeping the number and the 7-day guarantee
A US number costs from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan, billed as $21.60 a year, and includes unlimited incoming SMS, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month. It stays yours for as long as it renews, which is exactly what OpenAI's no-change rule demands.
If the number doesn't work for OpenAI's verification, the 7-day replacement guarantee gives you a free replacement US number within 7 days of activation, or a 100% refund if you prefer. If you haven't used it for any call or SMS, you can also get a refund within 7 days with no questions asked.

Questions
Can I sign up to ChatGPT with only a US phone number?
OpenAI lists the United States among the countries where phone-only sign-up has rolled out to new users. You can create the account with the +1 number alone, but OpenAI still asks you to link an email before upgrading to a paid plan or turning on MFA.
Should I type the 1 before my US number on OpenAI's form?
No. The country dropdown is already set to the United States, which supplies +1. Type the ten digits only, for example 201 555 0123. Adding the 1 gives eleven digits and is the most common reason a correct US number fails.
Will OpenAI send the code to my US number by WhatsApp?
No. OpenAI offers WhatsApp codes only in selected countries, and the United States isn't one of them. For a +1 number the code comes by SMS, and OpenAI does not send codes by email or voice call.
What happens if my US number stops working after I verify?
You can't replace it. OpenAI does not let you change the phone number on an account, and a phone-only account resets its password by SMS. That's why a number you keep renewing matters more with OpenAI than with most services.
Can I use one US number for several OpenAI accounts?
Only in a limited way. OpenAI allows a number to be used for phone verification at most three times, and once it has verified anything it can't create another new account. Give each account its own number.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
