A German mobile number for ChatGPT, without a German SIM
Germany is on OpenAI's list of countries where new users can create a ChatGPT account with a phone number alone. For anyone who wants their account anchored to a German mobile, that's convenient; for anyone abroad, it runs into a German obstacle, because local prepaid SIMs require an identity check before activation.
The number matters more with OpenAI than with most services. It can never be changed on the account afterwards, and any one number can be used for verification only three times in total. A +49 number you actually keep is the safe choice.
This page covers OpenAI's German touchpoints, the length and formatting quirks of German mobiles, how phone-only accounts behave, and what an SMSCreation German number gives you.
Why a German number for your OpenAI account
German life runs on SMS codes: banking apps, parcel lockers, car-sharing and classifieds all send them, and plenty of German users want their AI tools on the same kind of line. Phone-only sign-up lets a +49 number be the whole login at first.
From outside the country, getting such a number normally means a German prepaid SIM, and since July 2017 providers must verify every prepaid customer's identity, often by video call with an accepted ID and sometimes a German address. An SMSCreation German number skips the SIM entirely: you sign up with an email, pay, and the number appears in a web dashboard.
When OpenAI asks a German user for a number
Beyond these, OpenAI's help centre says a phone number isn't generally required to use ChatGPT.
- Phone-only ChatGPT sign-up, which OpenAI lists as rolled out to new users in Germany.
- Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app, where OpenAI says an email or authenticator app doesn't stand in for the phone step.
- The first developer key you generate on platform.openai.com.
- Text-message MFA, if you choose it, with a 6-digit code sent at sign-in.
Pick your Germany number
These Germany numbers are listed right now (36 in total). Choose one on the country page; the hidden digits are assigned when your order is approved and the number is activated.
German mobile format: 10 or 11 digits, no 0
German mobiles begin with 015, 016 or 017 at home. After +49 they run to either 10 or 11 digits, depending on the block the Bundesnetzagentur allocated, and both lengths are correct. Don't pad a shorter number or trim a longer one to match someone else's.
Two cleanups are needed before pasting into OpenAI's form. Change the dropdown from its default, United States, to Germany, then drop the trunk 0: 01512 3456789 becomes 1512 3456789. German notation also uses slashes and brackets, as in 0151/23456789 or (0151) 23456789; remove them.

How codes arrive, and what a phone-only account needs
OpenAI sends codes to German numbers by SMS. It doesn't use voice calls or email for them, and WhatsApp delivery covers other countries. With SMSCreation, the text appears in your dashboard's SMS inbox.
A phone-only account keeps depending on the number. OpenAI says passwords are reset by SMS, from a device you've already signed in on. MFA needs a linked email first (Settings → Account → Email → Add), and so does upgrading to a paid plan. Once the email is there, Google, Apple or Microsoft login becomes an option too.
Step by step with a +49 number
- 01Order a German number and read its full digits in your SMSCreation dashboard.
- 02Open ChatGPT sign-up, Codex, or platform.openai.com and reach the phone step.
- 03Switch the country to Germany and paste the number without 0, slash or brackets.
- 04Request the code and copy it from your dashboard inbox.
- 05Add an email if you signed up phone-only, then enable MFA under Settings → Security and login.
- 06Keep auto-renew on so the number stays active for resets and future codes.
Where the limits are
- OpenAI won't change the phone number on an account, for ChatGPT or the developer platform.
- Three verifications per number in total, and after the first one the number can't open a new account.
- “Too many signups with this number” means the number already has OpenAI history, sometimes from a prior holder; OpenAI says there's no workaround.
- Landlines, VoIP numbers, Google Voice and premium numbers aren't accepted, so a German Festnetz number won't do.
- “Unsupported country” concerns where you access OpenAI from, not the +49 number.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Price and keeping your German number
A German number is from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan ($21.60 billed yearly), with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, and no ID or proof of address. It stays yours while it renews.
The 7-day replacement guarantee covers you: if the number doesn't work for OpenAI's verification, you get a free replacement German number within 7 days of activation, or a 100% refund. If you haven't used it for any call or SMS, you can also get a refund within 7 days, no questions asked.

Questions
Does phone-only ChatGPT sign-up work with a German number?
Yes. OpenAI lists Germany among the countries where phone-only sign-up has rolled out, mostly to new users. Add an email afterwards so you can turn on MFA and subscribe to a paid plan.
My German number has 11 digits after +49. Will OpenAI accept it?
It should. German mobile numbers are either 10 or 11 digits after +49, depending on the block, and both are valid. Enter it exactly as shown, just without the leading 0.
Can I use a German landline for ChatGPT verification?
No. OpenAI accepts mobile numbers only and rejects landlines, VoIP numbers, Google Voice and premium numbers. German mobiles start with 015, 016 or 017.
Do I need German ID to get a German number for ChatGPT?
Not with SMSCreation. German law requires ID checks for prepaid SIM cards, but our German numbers don't involve a SIM: you sign up with an email, pay in crypto, and use the number in a web dashboard.
Can I switch my ChatGPT account to a new German number later?
No. OpenAI doesn't offer a way to change or update the number on an account, so verify with the number you plan to keep.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
