How Instagram confirms and re-checks the number

Instagram sends a 6-digit text when you add the number; entering it confirms the number. A confirmed number is needed for SMS two-factor authentication, and the number you enter while turning two-factor on becomes the confirmed one. Once two-factor is on, each login from an unrecognized device asks for a new code.
