Real mobile number vs. TextNow: an honest comparison

TextNow is a North American phone service with a free, ad-supported app for calling and texting over Wi-Fi, plus paid add-ons and wireless plans with a SIM card. SMSCreation sells real mobile numbers in 181 countries, managed in a web dashboard and built mainly for receiving SMS codes and keeping accounts reachable.

Both give you a phone number you can text from, but the rules around those numbers are very different. This page lays them out side by side. Every TextNow detail comes from TextNow's own help centre, linked at the bottom; every SMSCreation detail comes from our published terms.

Where TextNow is the better fit, we say so plainly. The goal is that you pick the right tool, not ours by default.

How TextNow works

TextNow's help centre says the service can only be downloaded and used within North America; if you are outside it, you can't register an account through the app or the website. Inside North America, with a data connection or Wi-Fi, you get a free number to call and text other North American numbers.

On top of the free app, TextNow sells subscriptions such as Lock In Number and Ad-Free+, and wireless service with a TextNow SIM card. Payments run through a card on file, which TextNow says you must keep on your account.

The key detail for verification is in TextNow's own words: because it has a limited inventory of numbers, it recycles inactive numbers tied to its free Wi-Fi service. It warns that if your number is released, you may have trouble accessing accounts tied to it, and someone else could take it. That is why TextNow requires Lock In Number, Ad-Free+ or an active TextNow SIM before most verification codes will arrive.

How an SMSCreation real mobile number works

An SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in one of 181 countries, in that country's official mobile format. Sign up with an email address, choose a country and a number, pay in USDT or USDC, and the number appears in your web dashboard. Nothing to install.

Every plan includes unlimited incoming SMS, unlimited incoming calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing call minutes per month. Codes land in your dashboard inbox; you can reply by SMS or place calls from the browser.

The number stays yours for as long as you renew it, with auto-renew from your wallet balance. It isn't recycled for low activity, so an account that asks for a code once a year still reaches you.

04

When TextNow is the better choice

TextNow does a lot for very little, and for some people it's the obvious pick:

  • You live in the US or elsewhere in North America and want a free number for calls and texts over Wi-Fi.
  • You want an actual phone plan with a SIM card and mobile data, not just a number for codes.
  • You mainly call and text friends and family rather than verifying strict apps.
  • You use the number often enough that inactivity is never an issue, or you're happy to pay for Lock In Number.
  • You'd rather pay by card than in crypto.
  • You want an app on your phone that behaves like a regular dialer and messaging app.
05

When SMSCreation is the better choice

A real mobile number fits better when TextNow's rules get in the way:

  • You are outside North America, where TextNow says you can't register an account.
  • You need a number in one of 181 countries, not only the US or Canada.
  • You need codes from services that don't accept VoIP numbers, which TextNow itself says some services won't support.
  • You need Canadian codes: TextNow says Canadian verification codes are largely unsupported.
  • You want the number kept without a usage requirement, and a written 7-day replacement or refund guarantee for WhatsApp, Telegram, Google and other apps.
  • You want no card on file and no link to your identity: email sign-up, crypto payment, no KYC.
06

Why number recycling matters

A recycled number is more than an inconvenience. Many accounts use your phone number to send login codes and password resets. If the number goes back into a pool and is handed to someone else, those codes can reach a stranger, and you may be unable to prove the account is yours. TextNow's help centre names exactly this risk.

Paying to lock the number in solves the recycling part, but not the classification part: the number is still described by TextNow as a VoIP number, and services that screen out VoIP lines will still refuse it. A real mobile number is classified as mobile in line-type lookups and stays yours for as long as you renew it, so both problems are covered.

How to switch from TextNow

Move accounts while your TextNow number still works, so no code is lost along the way:

  1. 01Make sure your TextNow number is active, and lock it in if you rely on it for codes during the move.
  2. 02List every account that uses the TextNow number, starting with email, messaging and anything with two-step verification.
  3. 03Sign up at SMSCreation with an email address, choose a country and pick a number, then pay in USDT or USDC.
  4. 04In each account, change the phone number to your new one and confirm it with the code in your dashboard inbox.
  5. 05Test a login or code request on your most important accounts.
  6. 06Only then let the TextNow number go, or keep it for everyday calling if you like.
08

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google

Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.

And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.

  • Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
  • Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
  • Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
  • Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
  • Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working

Questions

Is a TextNow number VoIP?

Yes. TextNow's own help centre refers to its numbers as VoIP phone numbers. SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers.

Why am I not getting verification codes on TextNow?

TextNow says most codes need a TextNow SIM, Lock In Number or Ad-Free+, and that some services don't support TextNow numbers at all. It suggests asking the sending app whether it accepts VoIP numbers.

Will TextNow take my number away?

TextNow recycles inactive numbers on its free Wi-Fi service. Its Lock In Number subscription keeps the number on your account regardless of use.

Can I use TextNow outside North America?

TextNow says it can only be downloaded and used within North America, and you can't register from outside it. SMSCreation can be used from anywhere.

Is SMSCreation a TextNow alternative?

For verification codes and for numbers outside North America, yes. For a cheap phone plan with data or free Wi-Fi calling, TextNow is the better fit.

Do I need a card for SMSCreation?

No. SMSCreation accepts only crypto, USDT or USDC on Tron, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Base or Solana.

Can I move my TextNow number to SMSCreation?

No. SMSCreation does not offer number porting in or out. You get a new real mobile number and update your accounts to use it.

Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?

Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
