How Zalo verification works

Zalo activates accounts with a mobile number and an activation code by call or SMS, and refuses landline and VOIP numbers. Changing your login number uses a 4-digit code.

Zalo activation details

Zalo is Vietnam's everyday messenger, and its help centre is written for Vietnamese users. Accounts are activated with a mobile number and an activation code, delivered by a call or by SMS. When you change your login number, Zalo sends a 4-digit activation code to the new number. Zalo states that it does not support landline or VOIP numbers. For accounts created from abroad, its only advice is to check the country code and phone number.

Some Zalo flows ask you to send an SMS in a set format to get the code, rather than receiving one. Our numbers include outgoing SMS, but whether a message reaches Zalo's service number from outside Vietnam is up to the networks. Zalo also follows Vietnam's telecom rules: when a Vietnamese carrier reclaims a number, Zalo gives the account 14 days to switch to a new valid number before it can be disabled. Common Zalo problems and fixes

• Invalid phone number → the number is mistyped, or it's a landline or VOIP number, which Zalo refuses → check the country code and use a real mobile number.
• No activation code → Zalo's in-app options let you send an SMS or call its hotline to get the code → follow the on-screen instructions. Our guide “Verification code not received” covers the other checks.
• Wrong activation code → codes read out on a call are easy to mishear, and codes expire → note the code carefully, re-enter it, or ask for a new one.
• “Is it you requesting an activation code?” alert → someone on an unknown device asked for a code for your account → if it wasn't you, open Zalo's security check, tap the not-me option and block the request.
• Told to update your phone number → Zalo was told the number was reclaimed by a carrier → switch to a new number within 14 days. If your number is still active, contact Zalo support.

Zalo's two-layer security and the email behind it

Zalo calls its 2FA “Bảo mật 2 lớp” (two-layer security). Once it's on, every login on a new device takes your password and then an OTP. Zalo's setup is four steps: Personal (Cá nhân) → Settings → Account and security (Tài khoản và bảo mật) → Email, enter and verify an address, then switch on two-layer security. After that the linked email can receive the OTP too.

For anyone registering from abroad, this is the most useful step. Zalo says a linked email helps you recover the account if you forget the password, receive security notices, and get login OTPs on new devices. That gives you a second way in that doesn't depend on SMS getting to your number from Vietnam. Zalo asks you to use an address you check often and to never share the OTP.

The three Zalo security alerts and what to tap

• “Did you just request an activation code?” appears when an unknown device asked for a code for your account. Not you: Security check (Kiểm tra bảo mật) → Not me → Block now. If you no longer use the registered number, tap Change phone number there.
• “Are you trying to log in?” appears when an unknown device triggers Zalo's security question. Not you: Not me → Block now, then Change password.
• “Did you just log in?” means a strange device is already signed in. Not you: Not me → Log out now, then Report it.
• If it was you, choose This is me (Đây là tôi) to dismiss the alert.
