Every number includes unlimited incoming SMS, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, and unlimited incoming calls — from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan, with a 7-day replacement guarantee — if the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or Google, we replace it free or refund 100%; plus a no-questions-asked refund if you haven't used it for any call or SMS.
How Upwork verification works
Upwork asks you to verify a phone number before posting a job or submitting a proposal, and can send six-digit codes by text for two-step verification. It rejects VoIP numbers.
Because SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers, Upwork treats them like any other phone: the code is delivered to your number and shows up in your dashboard inbox straight away.
Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google
Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.
And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.
- Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
- Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
- Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
- Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
- Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working
Upwork phone verification details
Upwork asks you to verify a phone number before you post a job or submit a proposal, to cut scams, spam and fraud. It also uses the number to enforce its one-account rule: you can have only one Upwork account, used as freelancer, client and agency, so signing up with a number tied to an existing account triggers an error. Upwork says the code should arrive instantly. It can't verify VoIP numbers and asks for a standard landline or mobile number. An SMSCreation number is a real mobile number.
The same number can serve two-step verification, which Upwork asks for at login and when you open settings or payments. Methods include a six-digit code sent to your phone, a six-digit authenticator code, a prompt in the Upwork app and a security question. Text-message codes only unlock after you verify your identity or add a billing method. Identity checks are separate from the phone: Upwork may ask freelancers for a government-issued photo ID, a short video call or photo, or proof of location for US-only jobs, and gives seven days before an account may be put on hold. A phone number can't satisfy those checks.

Common Upwork problems and fixes
- An error says the number is linked to an existing account → Upwork allows one account per person → recover the old account with Forgot password and close the new one, or contact Support if you've never had an account.
- The code doesn't arrive within a few minutes → check the number and try again. Our guide “Verification code not received” covers more fixes.
- The number is refused as VoIP → Upwork can't verify VoIP numbers → use a real mobile number instead.
- The Text message option won't switch on → SMS two-step verification needs identity verification or a billing method first → complete one of those, then add the number.
- You've lost access to your number → without a backup method you must submit Upwork's Reset your Security Information form → add an authenticator app or a security question as a second method now.
One Upwork account per person, one number per account
Upwork's phone article ties the number to its one-account rule. You can only ever create one Upwork account, though that account can act as freelancer, client and agency. If you sign up again with a number already on an existing account, Upwork shows an error. Upwork's advice is to recover the old account from the login screen with Forgot password, then close the new one, because a second account breaks its Terms of Service. If you no longer have the old account's email, or never had an account, use Contact Support at the top of the help centre.
Losing the phone itself is handled differently. Upwork recommends setting up several two-step verification methods so one lost device doesn't lock you out. Without a backup method, you fill in the Reset your Security Information form, and Upwork verifies your identity before restoring access. Upwork says the code should arrive instantly. If it hasn't after a few minutes, check the number and your coverage, then try again; VoIP numbers can't be verified at all.

Questions
Does an SMSCreation number work with Upwork?
In most cases, yes: our numbers are real mobile numbers, so Upwork can send its code to them by SMS — and by call where Upwork offers it. Upwork's own sign-up rules still apply, so check the verification details on this page before you buy.
Which country should I choose for Upwork?
Any country works. Pick the country where you want your contacts to see a local number, or where the service you're joining expects one.
Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?
Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.
Can I keep using the same number for Upwork?
Yes. The number is yours for as long as you keep it renewed, so you can receive codes again for new devices or account recovery.
What if I don't need the number after all?
You're covered by our 7-day replacement guarantee — if the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or Google, we replace it free or refund 100%; plus a no-questions-asked refund if you haven't used it for any call or SMS — request a refund within 7 days of activation.
How much does it cost?
From $1.80 a month on the yearly plan (billed yearly at $21.60/year). Every plan includes unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 minutes.
Does phone verification count as identity verification on Upwork?
No. The phone code only confirms you can receive messages at that number. Upwork's identity verification can ask for a government-issued photo ID, a short video call or photo, or proof you're in the US for US-only jobs, and those need your own documents.
Can I use the same number on a second Upwork account?
No. Upwork allows one account per person, which you can use as freelancer, client and agency. A number already on an account triggers an error, and creating a second account is against Upwork's Terms of Service.
What if my phone number is already linked to another Upwork account?
Upwork shows an error, because each person may have only one account. Recover the existing account with Forgot password and close the new one, or contact Upwork Support if you can't reach the old email.
I lost the phone used for Upwork two-step verification. What now?
If you have no backup method, Upwork asks you to complete the Reset your Security Information form; its team verifies your identity and then helps you regain access.
