Steam phone number details

Adding a phone number to Steam makes account recovery much easier: you can reset your password by SMS and move the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to a new phone with an SMS code. Add it in Account Details → Contact Info → Add a phone number, then enter the confirmation code Steam texts you. Only one phone number can be linked to a Steam account at a time. Enter it in international format with + and the country code. Steam texts can come from a 6-digit sender number, and in countries where Telegram is widely used, Steam may deliver the code through Telegram if the number has an active Telegram account.

Valve refuses VoIP numbers and numbers that can't receive texts, and says some carriers use VoIP technology in their cellular plans, which it also cannot support. You may share one number between several accounts, but Valve may treat those accounts as the same identity. If one of them receives a VAC or game ban, other accounts on the number can receive it too. Use a number that is yours alone.

Common Steam problems and fixes

• Number rejected as VoIP → Valve blocks VoIP and some carrier plans that run on VoIP → use a real mobile number; if you think the rejection is wrong, use Help Me With My Issue.
• SMS not arriving → check that texts from a 6-digit sender aren't blocked and your inbox isn't full → Steam pauses SMS after too many messages, so wait a few minutes to an hour. See our guide “Verification code not received”.
• Lost the phone with the authenticator → move it to a new phone with an SMS code sent to your number (a 2-day trade restriction follows); without the number or recovery code you need Steam Support.
• Authenticator codes rejected → the phone's clock is off → set the correct time, since codes are time-based.
• Items on hold → trades made in the first 7 days after adding the authenticator are held for 15 days → plan trades around it.

The SMS codes that move or remove a Steam Guard authenticator

On Steam the phone number earns its keep when your phone changes. Install the Steam Mobile App on the new device, sign in, and if the old authenticator is gone choose “I no longer have access to my authenticator”; Steam then moves it with an SMS code sent to your number. A 2-day trade and Community Market restriction follows. The alternative, Remove Authenticator from the gear menu on the Steam Guard page, costs 15 days without trading or the Market, which is why Valve recommends transferring instead.

Valve treats those texts as keys. Its advice is never to give an SMS recovery or removal code to anyone, because they exist only to add or remove authenticator devices. Steam Support will never ask for one. If the number is gone and you never saved your recovery code (Steam Guard page → gear icon → Recovery Code), the way back is a Steam Support ticket via “Help me with my issue”.

Steam backup codes also go through your number

• Account Details → Manage Steam Guard → Get Backup Codes asks for the SMS code sent to your phone number before showing the codes.
• Steam emails you every time new backup codes are generated and every time one is used.
• Valve suggests printing them, not saving them on the computer or taking a screenshot.
• To drop the number entirely: Account Details → Contact Info → Manage your phone number → Remove number, then follow the confirmation steps.
• One Steam Mobile App can hold several accounts (Steam Guard page → blue drop-down → Add an account), but each account sits on only one authenticator at a time.
