LINE verifies phone numbers by text message or a “Call me instead” automated call, but only for numbers from Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Elsewhere, new accounts sign up with Apple or Google.

LINE phone verification details
LINE is one of the few messengers where the country of your number decides everything. LINE's help centre says phone-number sign-up is for users who live in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. There you create an account on your main phone by verifying the number with a text message, or with “Call me instead”, an automated call that reads out the code. Elsewhere, LINE stopped phone-number sign-up from version 13.11.0: new accounts use Continue with Apple or Continue with Google instead.
LINE also lists what it won't accept for verification: landlines, virtual numbers, data-only SIM plans, Wi-Fi-only devices, Japanese numbers starting with 050, and mobile numbers outside the supported countries. What works is a number from a mobile provider in one of those five places that can receive texts. Registering a number already tied to another LINE account deletes that older account, so use a number that is yours alone.

Common LINE problems and fixes
- “Sorry, text message verification isn't available in your country” → you're verifying a number from a region without phone verification → LINE needs a mobile number from Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Thailand.
- “Invalid phone number” → the number is a type LINE refuses, or the country you picked doesn't match where the number was issued → re-select the country the number belongs to and check the digits.
- “Please wait XX day(s) then try again” or “Please try again later” → too many verification attempts, or a temporary suspension → wait the days shown; LINE says these limits can't be lifted early.
- The text never comes → LINE may send codes from several domestic and international numbers, so turn off spam filters and blocking of unknown or foreign callers, then use Call me instead. Our guide “Verification code not received” lists more checks.
- “Welcome back, XXXX!” with a stranger's name → the number was used on LINE before → tap No, that's not me, then create a new account.

Can I sign up for LINE with a number from any country?
No. LINE's help centre says phone-number sign-up is only for Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. In other countries new accounts are created with Apple or Google. If you want a phone-verified LINE account, choose a mobile number from one of those five places, if it's available in our country list.
Will LINE send the code again if I contact support?
No. LINE says that for security reasons it cannot send a verification code directly, even if you contact it. If neither the text nor the Call me instead option reaches you, LINE suggests checking with your provider or trying a different phone number.
Can I register LINE with a number from outside Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or Hong Kong?
Not by phone. LINE's help centre limits phone-number sign-up to those five places; elsewhere, from version 13.11.0, new accounts use Continue with Apple or Continue with Google. A Japanese number starting with 050 is also refused.
