imo phone verification details

imo registers you with a phone number: tap Register, enter the number, and type the verification code imo sends. imo says codes go out only by SMS or call. On Windows, Mac or the web, the code goes to your imo on mobile instead. There's a daily limit on code requests, and imo refuses a request if the device has already been linked to several numbers. imo says virtual or temporary numbers may fail verification. Ours are real mobile numbers.

Two rules matter for keeping the account. First, imo is not available in China, Nicaragua, Macedonia, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Second, imo lets you move the account to a new number only while you can still log in with the old one, and it recommends two-step verification. If you lose the number and can't get it back from the carrier, imo's own advice is to register a new account. Keep the number renewed.

Common imo problems and fixes

• Invalid phone number → imo gives three causes: a typo, a virtual or temporary number, or a number already registered or blacklisted → check the digits and use a real mobile number that isn't on another imo account.
• The code doesn't arrive → check your connection and the number, then tap Resend Code. If imo is in your blocked SMS list, unblock it. Our guide “Verification code not received” has more checks.
• Code requests stop working → you hit the daily limit → retry the next day.
• Verification fails on a phone you've used with other numbers → imo blocks code requests from devices linked to several numbers, for security → use a device that isn't tied to other imo numbers.
• “Change Phone Number” is unavailable → imo suspends it for 7 days after a suspicious login attempt → wait, and enter numbers without spaces, symbols or an extra 0 after the country code.

imo on desktop, web and a second device

imo registers on a phone first. Once that's done, logging in on Windows, Mac or the web doesn't send a new SMS: the code goes to imo on your phone instead. So the mobile number does its work once at registration and again whenever you set imo up on a fresh phone, while computers lean on the phone app.

imo also watches the device as well as the number. If one handset has already been linked to several numbers, imo refuses further code requests from it for security reasons. Register on a phone that hasn't been cycled through other imo numbers.

Changing or losing the number on imo

imo's Change Phone Number option lives at Me → Settings → Accounts & Security, and it only works while you can still log in with the old number. After a suspicious login attempt imo suspends the option for 7 days. If the old number is gone and the carrier can't return it, imo's advice is to register a new account, which means losing the old one.
