Epic Games SMS verification details

Epic Games uses your phone number for one thing: SMS two-factor authentication (2FA). With it on, every sign-in asks for a security code that Epic sends by text message. To turn it on, open the Password and security section of your Epic Games account, find Two-Factor Authentication and click Set up next to SMS. Enter the code you receive, and Epic confirms the method with an email. If you use several methods, pick the primary one from the three-dot (…) menu with Make my primary 2FA method.

2FA matters more on Epic than on most gaming accounts. Epic says it is required to claim some free games on the Epic Games Store, to send gifts in Fortnite, and to take part in Fortnite competitive events. SMS is one of four options, alongside Epic Authenticator (a number-match prompt in the Epic Games App), a third-party authenticator app and email codes. Epic warns that some regional numbers aren't supported for SMS 2FA, so choose a number in a country Epic accepts, and keep email 2FA or an authenticator as a second way in.

Common Epic Games problems and fixes

• "SMS to this region is not supported." → Epic doesn't send SMS 2FA to numbers from that region → use a number from a different country, or set up an authenticator app instead.
• The SMS code never arrives → Epic says the cause is either the number itself or SMS 2FA not being available in your region → at the 2FA prompt click Try another way and use email. Our guide "Verification code not received" covers the phone side.
• Locked out after changing numbers → the old number still holds your SMS 2FA → click Try another way, choose Email Verification or an 8-digit backup code, then replace the number in Password and security.
• Can't enable SMS as a method → Epic recommends switching to another 2FA option, such as Epic Authenticator or an authenticator app.

What SMS 2FA unlocks on Epic Games and Fortnite
