Every number includes unlimited incoming SMS, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing minutes a month, and unlimited incoming calls — from $1.80 a month on the yearly plan, with a 7-day replacement guarantee — if the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or Google, we replace it free or refund 100%; plus a no-questions-asked refund if you haven't used it for any call or SMS.

01

How Dropbox verification works

Dropbox can text a security code at every login with 2-factor authentication on, in the countries where it still offers SMS. Elsewhere it requires an authenticator app.

Because SMSCreation numbers are real mobile numbers, Dropbox treats them like any other phone: the code is delivered to your number and shows up in your dashboard inbox straight away.

02

Why it works with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram & Google

Apps check more than the digits: they look up the line type, the country format and whether the number can actually receive their code. Every SMSCreation number is a real mobile number in its country's official format — not a VoIP line — so it passes those checks the same way a SIM in your pocket does.

And we stand behind it with a 7-day replacement guarantee: if your number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free with a new number in the same country — or refund 100% if you prefer.

  • Non-VoIP, real mobile line type — line-type checks see an ordinary SIM number, not a VoIP line
  • Official country format with the right country code, prefix and digit count
  • Unlimited incoming SMS and calls — codes arrive by text or through the “call me” option
  • Private to you — never listed on public SMS sites, so it isn't flagged or rate-limited
  • Yours for as long as you want — re-verification and account recovery keep working

Dropbox SMS verification details

Dropbox uses a phone number for 2-factor authentication. You can receive your security code by text message each time you log in, or add a number as a backup phone behind an authenticator app. Set it up on dropbox.com only: click your avatar → Settings → Security, toggle 2-factor authentication on, re-enter your password and choose Use text messages. Enter the number and type the code Dropbox sends. When 2FA turns on you also get 10 emergency backup codes, eight digits each and single-use.

SMS is now country-dependent. Dropbox says text-message 2FA is only available in select countries, and it has removed the option in others. Since January 9, 2026, users in affected countries are prompted to switch to an authenticator app the next time they log in on the web. Where SMS is still offered, Dropbox recommends adding a backup phone so that, if you lose your main phone, you can choose Text my backup phone at login. Change the number from Settings → Security → Edit next to your phone number.

Common Dropbox problems and fixes

  • Invalid code error → you entered an older code or waited too long → only the most recent code works, so request a new one and enter it promptly.
  • Codes stopped arriving → your phone provider may be limiting these messages → wait 24 hours and try again, or check blocked messages. Our guide "Verification code not received" covers more.
  • Asked to switch to an authenticator app → Dropbox dropped SMS 2FA in your country → set up a TOTP authenticator app when prompted.
  • Lost your main phone → click Having trouble getting a code? → Text my backup phone, or use an eight-digit emergency backup code.

If Dropbox prompts you to leave SMS codes

Dropbox's SMS discontinuation FAQ describes exactly what happens in the countries where text-message 2FA was withdrawn. Since January 9, 2026, the next time you log in on the web and finish SMS verification, a window opens with a QR code and a secret key. You scan the code with your phone's camera or type the key into an authenticator app, click Next, enter the 6-digit code the app generates, and click Continue to Dropbox. Dropbox says you can't dismiss this prompt; the only alternative it offers is disabling 2FA, which it advises against.

Dropbox names Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile and Authenticator for Windows Phone 7 as TOTP apps that work, and notes that Linux and Unix users can generate codes with the OATH tool. Authenticator codes depend on the device clock, so set the time correctly. If you tick Trust this computer, you enter a 2FA code only once on that device.

Where a phone number still fits in Dropbox 2FA

  • During authenticator setup Dropbox offers to add a secondary phone number (optional), then Save or Skip for now. Dropbox says this option is only available in certain countries.
  • In supported countries a real mobile number makes a good secondary phone behind the authenticator app, so a lost handset doesn't lock you out.
  • Business users: if the Security tab shows Managed by single sign-on, your team admin has enabled SSO and Dropbox 2FA doesn't apply. Admins get an email about the SMS change one week before their team members.
  • Dropbox says 2FA can only be set up on dropbox.com.

Questions

Does an SMSCreation number work with Dropbox?

In most cases, yes: our numbers are real mobile numbers, so Dropbox can send its code to them by SMS — and by call where Dropbox offers it. Dropbox's own sign-up rules still apply, so check the verification details on this page before you buy.

Which country should I choose for Dropbox?

Any country works. Pick the country where you want your contacts to see a local number, or where the service you're joining expects one.

Will the number work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Google?

Yes — guaranteed. It's a real mobile number with unlimited incoming SMS and calls, so verification codes arrive by SMS or voice call. If it doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Google or any app you need, we replace it free within 7 days — or refund 100%.

Can I keep using the same number for Dropbox?

Yes. The number is yours for as long as you keep it renewed, so you can receive codes again for new devices or account recovery.

What if I don't need the number after all?

You're covered by our 7-day replacement guarantee — if the number doesn't work with WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or Google, we replace it free or refund 100%; plus a no-questions-asked refund if you haven't used it for any call or SMS — request a refund within 7 days of activation.

How much does it cost?

From $1.80 a month on the yearly plan (billed yearly at $21.60/year). Every plan includes unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 minutes.

Can I use this number for Dropbox 2-factor authentication?

Where Dropbox still offers SMS 2FA, yes. It's a real mobile number, so each login code arrives by text in your dashboard. It also works well as a backup phone behind an authenticator app. In countries where Dropbox has removed SMS, you'll need an authenticator app.

Why is Dropbox asking me to stop using SMS?

Dropbox says SMS reliability and security vary by region, so it keeps SMS 2FA only in countries where delivery is consistent. Users elsewhere are prompted to move to an authenticator app after January 9, 2026.

Which authenticator apps does Dropbox suggest?

Dropbox lists Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile and Authenticator for Windows Phone 7, and any app supporting the TOTP protocol works. On Linux or Unix you can use the OATH tool from the command line.

Will I need a Dropbox code every time I log in?

No. Dropbox says that if you choose Trust this computer when signing in, you only provide the two-factor code once on that device.
