Anthropic requires every new Claude user to verify a phone number from a supported location with a six-digit code sent by text message. VoIP numbers, Google Voice, app-created numbers and landlines aren't accepted, and there's no way to skip the step.

Claude phone verification details

Anthropic asks every new Claude user to verify a phone number. When you first create an account, you enter a number from a supported location and Anthropic sends a six-digit code by text message. You type it into the box and click "Verify code" to finish creating the account. Anthropic says there isn't a way to skip this step, and that the number is used only for account verification, to prevent spam and abuse. After that, you sign in with an emailed login link or "Continue with Google", so the number isn't a login method.

Anthropic won't accept VoIP numbers, Google Voice, numbers created using apps, landlines or any number that can't receive texts. Two more rules make the choice of number matter. No more than three Claude accounts can be verified with the same number, and once an account is verified its number can't be changed. Anthropic advises using a number you'll have access to long-term. It also says only people physically located in a supported location can create and use Claude accounts, so a number from a supported country doesn't stand in for actually being there.

Common Claude verification problems and fixes

• No code after a few minutes → Anthropic says the text can take a few minutes. If it's been more than five, click "Try again" to reset the window and re-enter the number, checking it carefully. Our guide "Verification code not received" covers the wider checklist.
• "Error sending code. Double check your phone number." → if you still see this or still get no code after re-entering the number, Anthropic's advice is to verify with a different phone number. Numbers from internet calling apps are a common cause, because they're refused.
• The code isn't working → texted codes are temporary. Enter only the most recent code, or click "Try again" to get a fresh one and enter it as soon as it arrives.
• A message says the number is already in use → three Claude accounts have already been verified with it. If you know those accounts, log in to one and ask Anthropic Support to unlink the number. Otherwise, enter a number that hasn't been used for verification yet.
• You're asked for a government ID → that's Anthropic's separate identity verification through Persona, used for some capabilities and integrity checks. It needs a physical government-issued photo ID and possibly a live selfie. No phone number can replace it.
