Careem verification details

Careem needs a valid mobile number to create an account. Tap “Continue with mobile number”, enter the number and type the 4-digit code Careem sends by SMS or WhatsApp; then add your full name. If the SMS is slow, Careem suggests WhatsApp, which is often quicker, or a phone call that delivers the code. At each sign-in you choose “Send code via WhatsApp” or “Send code via SMS”, enter the OTP and then your Careem password. Right after signing in, Careem offers “Enable secure login”, which turns on biometric authentication. Careem says you can add it only while signing in.

Pick the number's country carefully. Careem sets your region and wallet currency from the mobile number and location you sign up with, and the currency can't be changed on an existing account. If you move, you can update your number and keep the account in its old currency. Or you can open a new account with a local number, after spending any credit and reward points, which don't transfer. To change the number, go to Profile, pick the detail and verify the new number with a 4-digit code. Careem serves Middle East markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Pakistan.

Common Careem problems and fixes

• No OTP during sign-up → double-check the number, wait a few minutes, then switch to WhatsApp or ask for a call. Our guide “Verification code not received” covers the phone side.
• The WhatsApp code isn't reaching you → WhatsApp must be registered on that same number → choose SMS or a call instead, or set up WhatsApp on the number first.
• Errors when updating the number → update the Careem app, turn on location services at high accuracy and check your internet connection.
• The wallet is in the wrong currency → it was set by the number you signed up with → update the number and keep the old currency, or open a new account with a local number (UAE users can convert to dirhams in Careem Pay if they meet the conditions).

Careem picks your region and wallet currency from the number

Careem's choice of number has a consequence other apps don't have. It sets your region and your wallet currency from the mobile number and location you sign up with, and an existing account's currency can't be changed. In practice, the country of the number you verify with decides which currency the wallet keeps for the life of the account.

If you move later, Careem gives two options: update the number and keep the old currency, or start a new account with a local number after using up credit and reward points, which don't move across. UAE users can convert to dirhams in Careem Pay if they meet its conditions.
